Online Marketing
When did online marketing start ?
The internet came out in 1990
Internet Marketing I would say started in 1993. Thais when the first clickable banner was introduced and I found out we could make money from this place… The advertiser and a decent online magazine was Hot wire. I remember because I used to subscribe. In 1994 is when things really started picking up. We saw Yahoo also known as Jerry’s place as I used to market all my events, had a International DJ collaboration Chat room. It was amazing times as it was all new.
Oh yeah, Google only came around in 1998 if I’m not mistaken.
if you guys and gals want to hear about how fun exciting and the kind of things we did back then when the internet was just beginning put a vote for how many and if it hits a decent number, I’ll spill it all :)
Suddenly we had the whole world right in front of us, when just going out of the house was hard with parents and all….
How do you differentiate traditional from online marketing?
Traditional is not bad when it comes to marketing. The most important tools are the traditional ones.
Our lives and technologies are advancing in a rapid time, and new tools and methods are now available to help and support your business.
If in the past you needed to hang advertisements, nowadays you can go to Google Ads and just pick a certain audience to watch this ads. If you needed a radio station to talk about your store - now you can have your e-commerce going world wide.
The beauty about technology is that it’s always progressing, SEO, personalization and optimisation are relatively new and make a huge difference.
Nowadays we look at user experience as the journey the user goes in the website. In the past we would have to use Google analytics to measure traffic, colour the users and based on data (that’s most likely isn’t true) we decided what to do and what to deliver to each user. Tools such as Twik is a way to improve that journey and help with increasing conversions completely automatic. An old issue being solved with new technologies. Instead of A/B testing - personalized for each individual user.
bringing each user a personalized experience is never a thing we could have in traditional marketing.
I think that what I’m actually trying to say - tradition is good. New is good. It’s a matter of finding the technologies that can support both but in a relevant way.
Does internet marketing really work ?
I began Internet Marketing in 1998. While working as a real estate appraiser I wrote a course on how to win property tax appeals and it ranked on the first page for most every kind of property tax keyword phrase for years.
Then Google kept changing its algo to where only .gov sites would rank for those keywords. Strange since .gov sites have a vested interest to preserve the tax base; seems like an inherit bias. So it was a seesaw experience.
I also adventured into the affiliate marketing arena and soon was consistent in a mid 5 figure monthly net range targeting the diet, gardening, mortgage leads, insurance leads and other niches.
I had 4 full time people on my team creating niche related original content in conjunction with a plethora of unique IP addresses from hosting company and niche related blogs and business was good … until the Google algo kicked in and sales plummeted.
Every 5 months or so this seesaw would continue to where I would reorganize and build the viewership and sales sale’s numbers but sales were always less and less. Eventually I sold most of the company. A no-compete clause that kept me out of the game for a while.
I spent well over $20,000 purchasing and applying training courses. The difficult part is acquiring the necessary education and testing product ideas, designing systems and implementing a system of continuous small improvements.
When one finds worthwhile affiliate program to promote that actually enhances the end user’s success, life becomes better. It’s a win, win.
What is the best way to approach starting an online marketing business ?
What are the best online marketing solutions?
It really depends on what you want to promote. But in general these are my three favourite marketing solutions:
- Social media: You can get a lot of organic traffic through the algorithm. I recommend Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest. These are all free social media Platforms so it will be free organic traffic.
- Email marketing: Email marketing has the highest ROI compared to any other marketing strategies. The earlier you grow your emai list the better. I created a tutorial on how to set up your email list in my blog (Link in my bio since Quora doesn’t want people spamming their links)!
- Google Ads: Google Ads aren’t free but they are definitely effective. The good thing about Google Ads is that they target the exact audience you want!
What is the best online marketing app?
Even though mobile technology has drastically landscaped, most businesses owners today still count on desktop or laptop computers for a lot of their day to day tasks.
Over the past decade, technology has come a long way. With all the changes that have occured in the world during the past year due to Covid-19, there has been a large increase in online activity.
Whether you're an Apple, Windows, or an Android fan, apps can assistance you in every step of your marketing activity.
These apps will simplify this part of your job.
